Natural Looking restoration

When a tooth has a cavity or you need to replace a worn filling, a natural-looking white restoration can be a beautiful choice.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEzvei5nwbY

Advantages

White fillings have several advantages over silver filings.

They are bonded to your tooth, making it stronger than if we used a silver filling

We do not have to remove as much tooth structure as with silver filling

The bonding agent can insulate your tooth from extremes of hot and cold

Some white restorations can be done in just one visit

Procedure

After we remove the decay, we build layers of the resin directly onto your tooth. We use a special light to bond the resin to the tooth for strength.

A larger cavity may need an indirect restoration. We remove the decay or the old, worn restoration. The new restoration will be created in the lab to precisely fit your tooth.

Once crafted, we bond the restoration to your tooth for strength. It takes two or more visits to get this kind of restoration.

White fillings can be a great choice to give your healthy teeth and a beautiful, natural-looking smile.

There are ingredients in many products that we might want to avoid and dentistry is no exception. Some of these ingredients such as artificial sweeteners are controversial in terms of proven harm. In other cases, it is an issue of sensitivity or an allergy. Some people find they are sensitive to specific ingredients while others have no problems with dental ingredients but still want to avoid them out of concern.

Artificial Sweeteners

The use of sweeteners in toothpaste has mainly come about as a response to the concerns over sugars and their effect on dental health. On the flip side, there are also complaints and concerns about the effects of sweeteners on the rest of the body.

One artificial sweetener often used in toothpastes is sorbitol. It can, however, have a laxative effect. This could be worrisome for those most likely to be ingesting toothpaste, such as children. Artificial sweeteners have been anecdotally linked with symptoms such as headaches and nausea. Most experts do not, however, believe they pose a health threat in dental products. There is not any harm in avoiding them if you do have concerns though.

Dyes

Many toothpastes will contain dyes. This is particularly true of products geared for children, where the bright colours are thought to make the toothpaste more appealing. Some of the dyes are inevitably swallowed even after spitting out toothpaste. If you are one of the small number of people who suffer from allergic reactions to the dye, then it is best to avoid coloured toothpastes. Other complaints may include headaches from dyes.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

This chemical is one of the substances that help toothpaste foam up when you brush your teeth. One study linked it with ulcers in the mouth. Some national recommendations support its use while others recommend alternative substances.

Fluoride

Even though fluoride is a naturally occurring substance, some people choose to avoid it due to concerns about its effects on health. A certain amount of fluoride is absorbed into the body due to it being ingested when brushing as well as through some water supplies. It is, however, recommended by most national dental associations for its beneficial effects on teeth.

Young children should still be supervised when brushing to ensure they spit. If you prefer, there are many natural toothpastes on the market today that can do an excellent job of cleaning teeth. They tend to come infused with natural oils and antibacterial substances such as tea tree oil to help prevent tooth decay.

Making Healthy Choices

In most western countries, we have rules and regulations for health and safety when it comes to dental products.

You will have to decide which ingredients pose a risk or could potentially harm your health. This decision may be based on your own reading and media or personal sources. Also, in most cases asking advice from your local dentist proves to be the best advice and can effect your dental health as well as your overall well-being.

Micro dentistry is the latest dental technique to enable the removal of tooth decay without the need for drilling, and in some cases without the need for an anesthetic. Micro dentistry techniques are used to detect and restore tiny cavities in difficult to find areas. This advanced dental procedure uses air abrasion to remove decay and is suitable for adults and children.

The Need for Micro Dentistry

The use of fluoride has made a significant difference to the way cavities occur. Cavities used to be easier to spot, but now with harder tooth enamel cavities are no longer just focused on the grooves of the teeth. Cavities on the grooves of the teeth are simple to spot using x-rays and exploration methods. Smaller cavities are harder to detect, and this is where the micro dentistry procedure is required. By detecting the smaller cavities before they grow and penetrate the inner layers, dentists can prevent the need for root canal treatment.

The Micro Dentistry Instruments

During micro dentistry an air abrasion system will take the place of the traditional drill. Air abrasion blasts a jet of aluminum oxide particles at the decayed tooth to eliminate the decay. The system minimizes the loss of tooth material and is extremely safe and quiet.

With the air abrasion system around 90% of patients will not need an anesthetic, making it particularly suitable for nervous patients and children. The system also eliminates the noisy drilling process that tends to make some patients very nervous

The Micro Dentistry Procedure

The first step in the process will be to identify the cavities and areas of decay. This will be achieved by staining the teeth with colored dyes that will identify the cavities. Once the dentist has identified the cavities, the teeth will be isolated using cotton rolls or rubber dams.

The next step will be the use of air abrasion to eliminate decay. This procedure will be performed with the use of magnification tools and fiber-optic lights. Once the decay has been removed, a further dye process may be used to detect any small areas of decay that have been missed.

The Filling

An acid solution will be placed on the treated tooth that will etch the surface and make bonding easier. The dentist will then use materials to fill the tooth, just as he or she would with a traditional filling. Lights will be used to harden the filling, and the dentist will then polish the tooth. The final step will be to seal the treated tooth.

The Benefits of Micro Dentistry

Micro dentistry is an excellent alternative to traditional cavity treatments that use drills and anesthetic. The process is ideal for the detection and removal of microscopic particles of decay. Due to the lack of anesthetics and the reduced noise levels, micro dentistry is recommended for children and patients who suffer from dental anxiety.

Micro dentistry is also a very rapid process; most treatments should only last around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the number of teeth to be treated. Due to the minimal amount of decay that is removed, the damage to the tooth structure should also be minimal. With tooth decay, the earlier the detection of decay the more chance you have of preventing damage to the teeth, making micro dentistry an excellent preventative procedure.

The micro dentistry process may not be suitable for larger areas of decay, and your dentist will need to ascertain your suitability for this type of treatment. However, when it is suitable it is an excellent alternative to the traditional methods used in dealing with tooth decay.
